Founded by Alessandro Pizzin (aka Alieno deBootes) in 1978 and active in the Venetian underground music scene since the second half of the 1970s, Ruins became mainy a duo in late 1979 as Piergiuseppe Ciranna and Alessandro Pizzin, Coming from different backgrounds, the two shared a vision and besides recording more conventional songs, they also recorded a vast avant-garde musical repertoire. Theis work showcases the expressive and creative urgency of the period, in which research and even extreme experimentation characterized artistic production, ranging across an increasingly multifaceted sonic universe capable of blending reflective soundscapes with noisy, bizarre, and ultimately indefinable episodes. Attentive to multimedia and exploring connections with other expressive forms, the two Ruins often collaborated with artists from different disciplines, creating sound-video installations in art galleries and recording one of the first art albums, Marea, in 1984. Through their research, Ciranna and Pizzin developed innovative solutions that Ruins later incorporated into their more accessible and internationally recognized productions.
